Maine's northwesternmost moose zone covering the upper St. John River valley. Access is primarily through private logging roads (North Maine Woods checkpoints). Key landmarks include Allagash, St. Pamphile border crossing, and the Baker Branch watershed. Some of the densest moose habitat in the state.

Spans the north woods from Clayton Lake east to St. Francis. Mixed timber company land with excellent logging road networks. Towns of Eagle Lake and Portage serve as staging areas. Strong bull-to-cow ratios and reliable permit allocations.

Northern Aroostook County farmland zone. Mix of agricultural fields and woodlots around Caribou, Presque Isle, and Fort Fairfield. Moose are often spotted along field edges and logging roads. More accessible than the deep woods zones.

The largest permit allocation in Maine for 2026. Massive zone stretching from Chesuncook Lake north to the Canadian border at Daaquam. Heart of the North Maine Woods with remote camps, private roads, and outstanding moose density. Jackman and Greenville are common staging towns.

North Maine Woods zone east of Baxter State Park, from Matagamon to the Big Machias River. Remote, forested terrain accessed through Shin Pond and Patten. Popular with serious moose hunters who value solitude and big bulls.

The following Wildlife Management Districts have zero moose permits allocated for the 2026 season. These are generally the more populated southern and coastal regions of Maine where moose densities are too low to support a regulated hunt.
