Maine Moose WMD Map & Zone Guide — 2026

Maine's northwesternmost moose zone covering the upper St. John River valley. Access is primarily through private logging roads (North Maine Woods checkpoints). Key landmarks include Allagash, St. Pamphile border crossing, and the Baker Branch watershed. Some of the densest moose habitat in the state.

Spans the north woods from Clayton Lake east to St. Francis. Mixed timber company land with excellent logging road networks. Towns of Eagle Lake and Portage serve as staging areas. Strong bull-to-cow ratios and reliable permit allocations.

Northern Aroostook County farmland zone. Mix of agricultural fields and woodlots around Caribou, Presque Isle, and Fort Fairfield. Moose are often spotted along field edges and logging roads. More accessible than the deep woods zones.

The largest permit allocation in Maine for 2026. Massive zone stretching from Chesuncook Lake north to the Canadian border at Daaquam. Heart of the North Maine Woods with remote camps, private roads, and outstanding moose density. Jackman and Greenville are common staging towns.

North Maine Woods zone east of Baxter State Park, from Matagamon to the Big Machias River. Remote, forested terrain accessed through Shin Pond and Patten. Popular with serious moose hunters who value solitude and big bulls.

Central Aroostook farmland zone around Houlton, Mars Hill, and Bridgewater. Mixed agriculture and second-growth forest. Good road access compared to more remote zones. Moose concentrate along stream corridors and forest edges.

Western Maine mountains around Rangeley, Eustis, and the Bigelow Range. Bull-only zone with scenic mountain terrain. Popular destination for both hunting and recreation. Combined permit with WMD 13 — holders can hunt either zone.

Large western zone from Eustis to Jackman, including the Upper Kennebec Valley and Moose River region. October-only hunting. Excellent moose habitat with vast stretches of managed timberland. The Forks and Jackman are primary base camps.

East of Moosehead Lake, covering areas around Kokadjo, First Roach Pond, and the Katahdin Iron Works Road. October bull-only zone. Remote access but legendary moose country with bogs, hardwood ridges, and logging roads throughout.

Foothills zone east of Baxter State Park, including Stacyville, Sherman, and the Medway area. Bull-only permits. Transitional habitat between the deep north woods and the more settled areas of central Penobscot County.

Large zone spanning southern Aroostook, northern Penobscot, and northern Washington County. Farm-woodland mix with scattered moose populations. Bull-only hunting. Towns include Danforth, Topsfield, and Springfield.

Upper Androscoggin Valley in the western mountains. Covers Bethel, Rumford, and the Grafton Notch area. Bull-only with limited permits. Combined with WMD 15 — permit holders can hunt either zone. Beautiful mountain terrain with mixed forest.

Franklin and Somerset County foothills around Farmington, Kingfield, and Carrabassett Valley. Small permit allocation. Combined with WMD 7 — holders can hunt either zone. Mountainous terrain with ski resort areas and managed forest.

South and east of Moosehead Lake, including Greenville, Monson, and the upper Piscataquis River area. October bull-only zone. Combined with WMD 17. Gateway to Moosehead Lake region with a mix of private timberland and public access.

Oxford County foothills stretching from Fryeburg to the New Hampshire border. Limited bull-only permits. Combined with WMD 12. Mix of rolling hills, farmland, and forest. Less remote than northern zones but still productive for moose.

North-central Maine farm-woodland zone around Dover-Foxcroft, Dexter, and Newport. October bull-only with very limited permits. Combined with WMD 14. Mix of agricultural land and second-growth forest in the Piscataquis and Penobscot River watersheds.

Mid-Penobscot River Valley covering Millinocket to Old Town. Bull-only zone straddling the Penobscot River corridor. Includes parts of the Penobscot Experimental Forest and surrounding timberland. Bangor-area hunters' closest moose zone.

Eastern Maine woodlands north of Route 9 (the Airline). Covers the area from Topsfield to Wesley, including parts of the Beddington and Deblois barrens. Bull-only permits. Vast blueberry barrens and spruce-fir forest with good logging road access.

Eastern coastal plain from Machias to Calais. Large zone with relatively few permits. Combined with WMD 28 — holders can hunt either zone. Mix of coastal lowlands, bogs, and boreal forest. Includes Bold Coast and Downeast areas.

Eastern Maine woodlands south of Route 9. Covers the area from Cherryfield to Beddington. Combined with WMD 27. Bull-only hunting in a mix of blueberry barrens, spruce forest, and wetlands. Relatively few permits make this a tough lottery draw.
