Safe Cash Swaps with Escrow Protection

Sending thousands of dollars to a stranger shouldn't require blind trust. MooseTrader gives you real protection for every cash swap.

Why You Need Protection

In 2023, Jim — the founder of MooseTrader — was in a bind. His son Noah had been drawn for a cow permit in a zone they wanted a bull. After 40 hours of searching Facebook groups, forums, and phone calls, he finally found someone willing to swap. The deal: a cow permit for a bull plus $2,500 cash.

The payment method? PayPal Friends & Family — to a complete stranger found on Facebook. No buyer protection. No escrow. No contract. No way to get the money back if the other person ghosted.

It worked out. The stranger followed through. The swap went to IFW and was approved. Noah got his bull permit and had an incredible hunt.

But it easily might not have. PayPal Friends & Family offers zero buyer protection. If the other party had taken the money and disappeared, Jim would have been out $2,500 with no recourse. No dispute process. No refund. Nothing.

This happens. Every season, hunters get burned by strangers on Facebook who take money and never follow through with the swap paperwork. There's no verification, no accountability, and no protection.

That experience is exactly why MooseTrader exists — and why escrow protection is built into every cash swap on the platform.

How Escrow Works on MooseTrader

When you agree to a swap that includes cash, MooseTrader gives you three options. You choose the level of protection that fits your comfort and budget:

PayPal Goods & Services

Quick, familiar, and protected. PayPal G&S gives the buyer full purchase protection. If the swap falls through, you file a dispute and PayPal investigates.

  • Buyer protection included
  • Dispute resolution via PayPal
  • Fast setup — most hunters already have PayPal

Escrow.com

Full, licensed escrow. Funds are held by Escrow.com — a regulated escrow company — until both sides confirm the swap is complete with IFW.

  • Funds held by licensed escrow company
  • Released only when both parties confirm
  • Best for high-value swaps

No Escrow

Direct payment between parties. MooseTrader provides a full risk disclosure that both sides must acknowledge before proceeding.

  • No fees beyond MooseTrader membership
  • Both parties sign risk disclosure
  • Use at your own risk

The choice is always yours. MooseTrader strongly recommends PayPal G&S or Escrow.com for any swap involving cash, but we won't force it. If both parties choose no escrow, they sign a disclosure acknowledging the risk.

Escrow Fees

Protection isn't free, but it's cheap compared to losing thousands:

MethodFee StructureExample ($2,500 swap)
PayPal G&S3.49% + $0.49 per transaction~$87.74
Escrow.com2.6% with a $50 minimum~$65.00
No Escrow$0$0 (but no protection)

Who pays the fee? That's negotiable between the parties. MooseTrader's contract system lets you specify whether the buyer pays, the seller pays, or the fee is split 50/50. Most commonly, the person sending cash pays the fee since they're the one getting protection.

Verified Permits

Escrow protects your money. Permit verification protects your time.

Every permit listed on MooseTrader is cross-referenced against the InforME public lottery results. When a hunter creates a swap listing, we verify that their name appears in the official results for the WMD, season, and permit type they claim.

This eliminates the most common scam on Facebook groups: people listing permits they don't actually have. On MooseTrader, if the permit doesn't match InforME, it doesn't get listed. Period.

Combined with escrow, this means you know the permit is real and your money is protected. No other platform offers both.

MooseTrader vs. Facebook Groups vs. Competitors

Here's how the options stack up:

FeatureMooseTraderFacebook GroupsLegacy Sites
Permit VerificationYes — InforME cross-referenceNoNo
Escrow ProtectionYes — PayPal G&S + Escrow.comNoNo
E-Signed ContractsYes — IFW-readyNoNo
Smart MatchingYes — WMD, season, type, cashNo — manual searchBasic lists only
Mobile-FriendlyYesFacebook appNo — desktop-era UI
Pre-RegistrationYes — before the drawingNoNo
Winner Watch AlertsYes — free, unlimitedNoNo

Legacy swap sites like moosepermit.com and mooseswap.com have been around for years, but they offer no verification, no escrow, no contracts, and no modern UI. Facebook groups are free but chaotic — no accountability, no protection, and no way to verify that the person you're dealing with actually has the permit they claim.

MooseTrader is the only platform that combines all of these protections in one place.

What Happens If a Swap Falls Through

Swaps can fall apart for several reasons: a hunter changes their mind, IFW rejects the transfer paperwork, or one party simply stops responding. Here's how each escrow option handles a failed swap:

  • PayPal G&S: The buyer files a dispute through PayPal's Resolution Center. PayPal investigates and, in most cases, returns the funds to the buyer if the seller can't prove the swap was completed. Resolution typically takes 10–30 days.
  • Escrow.com: Funds are held until both parties confirm the swap is complete. If either party flags an issue, Escrow.com mediates. If the swap doesn't happen, funds are returned to the buyer. This is the cleanest resolution process available.
  • No Escrow: If you chose no escrow and the swap falls through, your options depend on the payment method used. PayPal Friends & Family, Venmo, Zelle, and cash offer no buyer protection. You may have no recourse.

MooseTrader's e-signed contracts also provide a paper trail. Even in a no-escrow scenario, having a signed agreement with both parties' names, permit details, and agreed terms gives you a foundation for a small claims court case if it comes to that.

The bottom line: $65–$88 in escrow fees is cheap insurance on a $2,500 deal. Don't learn this lesson the hard way.

Getting Started

Escrow protection is available to all MooseTrader members. When you create or accept a swap offer, you'll choose your preferred payment protection method as part of the deal. Both parties must agree on the method before the contract is generated.
